Technical report (Literature review)

The increase in energy consumption and reduction of resources is another way construction waste negatively impacts the environment. The building and construction industry uses materials with high embodied energy content to fulfil heating, ventilation and air conditioning demands (Bribián, Capilla, & Usón, 2011). Manufacturing, transportation and installation in a building made of materials such as steel, concrete and glass require a large quantity of energy (Bribián et al., 2011). In addition, the extraction of minerals commonly used for construction causes a significant reduction of energy in our planet’s natural stock concentrating 63% in iron ore, aluminium 24%, and copper 6% (Bribián et al., 2011). Hence, construction waste leads to an increase in energy consumption and a reduction in resources.
